Kia ora and welcome to our research project on social media and digital marketing!

Our project aims to find out more about rangatahi / young people’s:

internet use, social media platforms use and their experience seeing vaping, alcohol and tobacco product marketing on social media.

We’re aiming to identify and challenge some of the things that happen on social media platforms that may potentially affect the wellbeing of rangatahi/young people. There are 3 stages to this research:

1) a survey with 14-20 year olds. We’ve had a great response to our survey, allowing us to get a wide range of views.

2) Friendship group discussions with young people aged 14-20.

3) Interviews with young people who share digital marketing content they see.

You can read about outputs from our research, including results and key findings here.

If you have any concerns about the ethical conduct of the research you may contact the Victoria University of Wellington HEC Convenor: Associate Professor Rhonda Shaw. Email hec@vuw.ac.nz or telephone +64-4-463 6028.

We’re also looking for Māori to take part in research related to this project...

About our logo and project title

Te Ngāngara: Social media and digital marketing

The creeping reptilian-like ngāngara can travel through virtual spaces affecting us in ways we might not notice. This project explores digital marketing on social media, what is happening and how we respond – it might be both positive and negative.

The design is a digitalised representation of the koru. It symbolises progression, growth, connection and support.

The geometric circles and vibrant green modernises a traditional symbol for the online realm.
